Located in Kennebec County, Waterville is a Maine city on the river’s west bank and is part of the Augusta-Waterville Micropolitan areas in terms of statistics. Once inhabited by the Abenaki tribes, Canibas peoples, Waterville was formerly called Taconnet after a famous local Indian chief and was settled by the English by 1692. During King Williams’s war, the settlements were burned down after which the Indian tribe vacated the area. In the mid-18th century, general John Winslow built fort Halifax, which brought to a gradual end the skirmishes with indigenous tribes. Incorporated after being organized as the Kingfield plantation in 1771, Waterville was part of Winslow with town meetings being held across the river. The difficulty of crossing the river necessitated the locals to hold their town councils and Waterville was incorporated as of 1802.
