Houma had a population of 33747, according to the 2010 census. Houma is surrounded by many unincorporated communities, the largest being Bayou Cane, which is an urbanized community considered to be part of Houma. However, the region is not part of Houma and belongs to a separate census-designated place. The city was named after the Native Americans, Houma, who is believed to be related to the Choctaw. The United Houma Nation is recognized by the local Louisianan government but dismissed by the federal government. The city was rated as one of the most affordable cities by the International Housing Survey.
