Volkswagen or VW is a German vehicle manufacturer that was founded in 1937 by a Nazi Labour Union, the German Labour Front in Wolfsburg. The parent company, the VW Group, is the largest carmaker worldwide by sales with a vibrant market in China and Europe. Volkswagen is the people’s car in German and the car introduced the word luxury in its 1930’s Europe when most people could at most only afford a motorcycle.
During the Second World War, Volkswagen then called Kdf-Stadt suffered from the bombardment of its factory and owed its existence after the war to a British army major. The occupying British army major Ivan Hirst was supposed to destroy or ship to Britain the remnants of the plant as it had been used for military purposes according to the Potsdam agreement. He refurbished one of the factories and demonstrated light vehicle production that appealed to the army’s need for transport, forcing the order of 20,000 cars.
