The Tesla motor company specializes in automotive and energy, being the pioneer manufacturer of electric cars with facilities in Nevada and California. Tesla as a name is attributed to engineer Nikola Tesla, and the company was founded in 2003 with a vision to offer electric cars to the average customer at an affordable price. As of February 2007, tesla motors shortened their name to just tesla and after ten years of operations have been ranked the world’s bestselling passenger car with plug-in technology.

After GM recalled their EV1 electric cars and destroyed them in 2003, tesla was influenced to commercialize the electric vehicle after the series A funding investments led by Elon Musk. The initial offering featured a premium sports version that was aimed at early adopters of alternative fuel, followed by compacts and affordable sedans. The tesla roadster was designed and detailed by the team lead by Musk, who became the controlling investor after the financing round.
