Calculate your car shipping price estimate using distance, pickup and delivery locations, vehicle type, transport method, season and other important factors. The cost of transporting a vehicle with a car shipping company ranges from $500 to $2,500. Booking 3 to 4 weeks in advance, choosing open carrier transport and using terminal to terminal shipping result in the lowest price.

Check Your Route Before You Book
Talk with a car transport specialist about open, enclosed, expedited, and door-to-door shipping. We’ll review your pickup and delivery locations, check available carriers for that route, and help you find the best price available for your shipment.
Busy metro routes usually cost less than remote pickups or deliveries because more carriers already run those lanes.
Vehicle Year, Make, and Model
Larger, heavier, modified, oversized, or non-running vehicles may need special equipment or extra carrier space.
Open or Enclosed Carrier
Open transport is usually the lowest-cost option. Enclosed transport adds more protection for luxury, exotic, classic, or high-value vehicles.
Running or Inoperable Vehicle
Inoperable vehicles may require winch loading, extra time, and carrier approval before pickup.
Pickup Date Flexibility
Flexible pickup dates can help lower the price. Same-day, rush, or narrow pickup windows usually cost more.
Season and Route Demand
Snowbird routes, summer moves, holidays, fuel prices, and weather can all affect the final shipping price.

Service Option
Typical Cost Impact
Best For
Why It Changes Price
Open Carrier
Lowest-cost option
Daily drivers, used cars, and standard vehicles
Open trailers are widely available and can carry several vehicles at once, which is why open transport is usually the cheapest way to ship a car.
Enclosed Carrier
Usually 30% to 60% higher
Luxury, exotic, classic, collector, and high-value vehicles
Covered trailers offer added protection and carry fewer vehicles.
Expedited Pickup
Higher than standard scheduling
Urgent moves or limited pickup windows
Dispatchers have less time to match the vehicle with an available carrier.
Door-to-Door Transport
Varies by access
Customers who want convenient pickup and delivery
Narrow streets, rural roads, or restricted areas may require extra coordination.
Pricing note: Service type affects price because each option uses different carrier space, equipment, and scheduling. A live quote will show which services are available for your shipment.
Vehicle Type
Shipping Cost by Vehicle Type
Vehicle size, weight, value, clearance, and condition can affect your car shipping quote. These details help carriers decide how much trailer space, equipment, and handling your shipment may require.
Vehicle type impact on car transport estimates
Vehicle Type
Price Impact
Reason
Compact car
Lowest
Uses less trailer space and weight capacity.
Sedan
Standard
Common size for most nationwide auto transport quotes.
SUV or crossover
Moderate increase
Higher weight and larger dimensions may affect carrier placement.
Pickup truck
Higher
Longer length and added weight can reduce trailer availability.
Luxury or exotic car
Higher
Often requires enclosed transport and special handling.
Inoperable vehicle
Higher
May require winch loading and extra carrier equipment.
Pricing note: Vehicle type can affect your final quote because size, weight, modifications, clearance, and running condition all matter. Oversized, lifted, low-clearance, luxury, or inoperable vehicles may cost more to ship.
Pickup Timing
Standard vs Expedited Shipping Cost
Vehicle pickup urgency can affect your final quote. With a flexible schedule, dispatchers have more time to match your shipment with the right carrier at a better price.
How shipping speed affects auto transport pricing
Shipping Speed
Typical Cost

Flexible pickup
Lowest
Customers who can wait for the best carrier match.
Standard pickup
Average market rate
Most nationwide car shipping orders.
Expedited pickup
Higher
Moves with a limited pickup window.
Same-day pickup request
Highest
Urgent vehicle transport when fast carrier assignment is needed.
Pricing note: Faster pickup usually costs more because there is less time to find and schedule a carrier. Flexible pickup dates can help lower your vehicle shipping cost.
Seasonal Trends
Seasonal Car Shipping Price Trends
Seasonal demand can affect nationwide car shipping prices. Rates often rise during summer moves, snowbird season, holiday weeks, severe weather, and periods with limited carrier availability.

What the numbers show
Two patterns hold across every route above, and they are the basis for every estimate on this page.
Open transport runs about $0.65 per mile on routes over 1,000 miles, and about $0.80 per mile on routes under 1,000 miles. That relationship is consistent across all eleven published routes.
Longer routes cost more in total but less per mile. The fixed cost of dispatch, loading and paperwork is the same whether a vehicle travels 600 miles or 2,900, so it is spread thinner on a long move. A 650-mile move is published at $520; a 2,915-mile move is published at $1,900 — four and a half times the distance for three and a half times the price.
Enclosed transport costs more on the same route. Enclosed trailers carry fewer vehicles per load and are less widely available, so the same route prices higher and books further ahead.
What a calculator cannot know
An estimate is arithmetic. A quote is a carrier agreeing to a price. Five things sit between them, and no calculator can see any of them:
Where the carrier already is. Price depends heavily on whether your vehicle fits into a route a carrier is already running. The same move can price differently two days apart.
Whether pickup and delivery are metro or rural. A ZIP code twenty miles off a main interstate corridor can change both the price and the pickup window.
Fuel costs on the week you ship. Carrier pricing moves with diesel.
Your vehicle’s actual condition and size. Modifications, oversized tires, roof racks, low clearance, or a vehicle that does not run all change the equipment required.
Demand on your route that week. Snowbird season southbound in autumn and northbound in spring, and the summer moving peak, all move prices.
How to use this page
Treat the figures here as a benchmark for sanity-checking any quote you receive, including ours. A quote far below these ranges usually means something has been left out of it. A quote far above them deserves an explanation. For a real price on your specific route, vehicle and dates, request a route-specific quote or call (866) 517-7015.
Published route pricing is a benchmark drawn from AutoTransport.com’s own rate table for open transport. It is not a quote, and it is not a guarantee of price or delivery date.
FAQs
Car Shipping Cost Calculator FAQs
These answers cover the most common questions customers ask before using a car shipping cost calculator or booking transport.
How does a car shipping cost calculator work?
A car shipping cost calculator uses details like pickup and delivery locations, vehicle type, transport method, vehicle condition, and pickup timing to estimate the cost of shipping a car.
What affects the cost of shipping a car?
The biggest price factors are distance, route demand, vehicle size, carrier availability, transport type, and pickup timing. Flexible dates and popular routes usually make it easier to find better pricing.
Is the calculator price guaranteed?
The calculator gives you an estimate, not a guaranteed flat rate. Your final price is confirmed after the route, vehicle, schedule, and carrier availability are reviewed.
Is open or enclosed transport cheaper?
Open transport is usually cheaper because open carriers are more common and can move several vehicles at once. Enclosed transport costs more because it offers added protection and has less trailer space.
Why do prices change by season?
Prices can rise during busy moving periods, snowbird season, holidays, bad weather, fuel price increases, or times when fewer carriers are available on a route.
Can a specialist review my quote?
Yes. A car transport specialist can review your pickup and delivery locations, check carrier availability, and help confirm the best available price for your shipment.
